New Music Weekend 16/4/21

Another week in the bag and, though we don’t have as many new releases as previous weeks, we are back to share our favourite new releases. The new releases this week include some Homegrown Heroes and personal favourites of ours but we can guarantee all of it is great new music that you can enjoy! So sit back and relax as we guide you through the new music this weekend!

Charlie Simpson – One Of Us

Known for his boy band days in Busted, Charlie Simpson has written a beautiful love song as a solo artist with a gorgeous piano melody accompanying his vocal. This ballad is essentially about how important and precious every second together with a significant someone is, the importance of being with this person and how neither would get very far without the other, how someone is a big part of the things Charlie does and how willing he is to put everything into the relationship so that it will last. That is a lot of feeling packed into one gorgeous song.

Eiza Murphy – Bat and Ball

The first of our Homegrown Heroes this week is Eiza Murphy with her new single ‘Bat and Ball’. Eiza is an up and coming singer/songwriter who is currently living in London. Her debut single ‘Black Hole’ may be familiar to regular radio listeners as it featured on RTÉ 2FMs as ‘Track of the Week’. With her two previous releases both reaching no.1 in the Irish iTunes chart, we are hoping ‘Bat and Ball’ follows suit. In comparison to her previous releases, ‘Bat and Ball’ is my favourite song of Eiza’s. Keep an ear out for Eiza because she is going to get more recognition with each release!

Imelda May – 11 Past The Hour

We all love a bit of Imelda May in my family so, needless to say, we were excited for her latest album release ’11 Past The Hour’. If you are not familiar with Imelda May’s work, she is a singer-songwriter, poet and producer from Dublin. Following on from her previous album ‘Live Love Fresh Blood’ that came out in 2017, Imelda May has truly found herself within her music and brings us along on an emotional journey through her music.  I can honestly say her new album didn’t disappoint. With songs such as ‘Diamond’, ‘Made To Love’ and ‘Never Look Back’ standing out the most to me as my favourites, ’11 Past The Hour’ is truly her best work to date in my opinion.

Julia Michaels – Love Is Weird

So this acoustic single is the another song taken from Julia’s upcoming album ‘Not in Chronological Order.’ It feels like a confession detailing all the highs and lows of love and what love can leave behind in the process. The vocals are airy and ethereal and the whole song is a big departure from her previous single ‘All Your Exes’. It is slow and just a little bittersweet and shows the impact that love has had on her but also gives us a sense of what exactly her new album will focus on.

Kygo – Gone Are The Days

Kygo isn’t all about fast paced dance tracks as the new single ‘Gone Are the Days’ shows. This single focuses on vocals and the instrumental aspects of the song. Kygo has suggested that this release marks a “new chapter of music” and, honestly, I’m looking forward to this new chapter based on this release. James Gillespie provides an emotional and meaningful performance and putting both Kygo’s production with Gillespie’s vocals was a stroke of genius.

Regard, Troye Sivan & Tate McRae – You

This song made its way onto our radar because Niamh is a massive fan of Troye Sivan’s music. It’s his first single release of 2021 and this time he has teamed up with Regard and Tate McRae. This is what a pop dance track should sound like and we are here for it! The beat is catchy, the lyrics fun and the harmonies between Tate and Troye simply fitting! Here’s hoping it makes it onto the radio waves here in Ireland but until then I’ll be dancing around my bedroom to this insane bop. Another track I wish clubs were open to dance with my friends on a night out to this one.

Ruth B – Situation

Since 2015, Ruth B has been a regular on our personal playlist since her very first single. She is a contemporary singer-songwriter and producer from Canada. She is back with her second single of 2021 and, in true Ruth B style, it is all about listening closely to the lyrics behind a mellow beat. ‘Situation’ tells the story of a personal matter which will resonate with many listeners. There is something truly special about Ruth’s voice and her use of storytelling within her songs that has us hanging on every lyric. Make sure you check out her music.

Ruthanne – F L.Y

I’m telling you now that F.L.Y means F*cking Love You and if that doesn’t make it abundantly clear what this song is about then I don’t know what will. Ruthanne, as always, provides a beautiful, soulful vocal over piano and strings. The song isn’t just about love in the broad sense of the word; it’s about every little thing she loves about the person she wrote this song about. This song is heartfelt and genuine and Ruthanne’s vocals convey her sincerity.
