Hello dear readers! Today we have another music exclusive for you. T UGNA’s “Right Now” drops at midnight and we, here at Our Muchness Guide, are incredibly excited for this song to be out. T UGNA’s name might sound familiar as he is the artist that gave us our first music exclusive back in March with his phenomenal hit ‘2020 Vision’. That review can be found here.

For those of you who are meeting T UGNA for the first time, he is a Roscommon based rapper and one of our dear Homegrown Heroes. His music has been featured in the past by Earmilk and Nialler9 and has got airplay on KCLR96FM. Fans of Schoolboy Q, Eminem, Jyellowl and Big Sean will be drawn in by T UGNA’s music. He is continuously working on improving his style and, honestly, with the release of ‘Right Now’, listeners will be able to see the different styles he incorporates to make his songs truly his own and stand out.
‘Right Now’ brings T UGNA’s music to a completely new level that he hasn’t reached before. Jack Higgins who is a music engineer based in Dublin who previously worked with T UNGA before also worked on this single. US Producer Lytton Scott also worked on this song providing the intoxicating instrumental. However, the focus of this song truly lies within the lyrics. Forget what you know about T UNGA from ‘2020 Vision’ as ‘Right Now’ launches you into a time and place where you need to focus on the lyrics and believe in the message they are telling you! He truly is an act to keep your eyes out for in the Irish Rap scene as he continues to grow with every release.
So without further ado let’s get down to business (to defeat the huns… sorry it had to be done)… Let’s see what we thought of “Right Now”.
Right Now

E: With T UGNA returning to give us a new sneak peek to enjoy, I thought it was only fair that we have a look at the new single ‘Right Now’ and do a little comparing and contrasting between it and ‘2020 Vision’ which wasn’t released all that long ago back in March. That very fact that March was his last release speaks volumes about T UGNA’s work ethic and creative drive. ‘Right Now’ seems to be a far more lyrically driven effort and keeps the music and production to a minimum which naturally forces the listener to focus on the message in the lyrics. The minimalist, simplistic approach to the music suits this track though and the music, that is rarely drawn to the fore in the track, genuinely compliments what seems to be T UGNA’s most lyrically expressive track to date. The music starts by creating a hypnotic background for the track with what sounds like looped piano notes and allows T UGNA to create the beat within his flows which then reappears, for what can only be described as the verses, until the chorus kicks in. Since the track is more dependent on lyrics and flow, ‘Right Now’ needed to be lyrically stronger than ‘2020 Vision’ and flow smoothly and T UGNA delivers on both counts.
‘Right Now’ strikes me as almost a follow up and continuation of the thoughts outlined in ‘2020 Vision’. As I mentioned last time, T UGNA creates the rhymes he needs in his flows through his pronunciation of specific words and the way he emphasizes specific syllables. For example: he rhymes bitch and different by emphasizing the first syllable of bitch and pronouncing different as though it is spelt ‘differin’ (Sorry, the English nerd in me finds this rhyming method just fascinating). ‘Right Now’ seems like a train of thought set to music that focuses on the new, better version of the artist; more self confident and feeling untouchable with little interest in what others have to say in the very best way. This is very much a track that implies that T UGNA is getting ready to take on the world and plans on winning.
The track really does show signs of careful planning between artist and producer because a heavy hand from either side would have tipped the balance and overpowered one aspect or the other. T UGNA has a strong follow up to ‘2020 Vision’ in ‘Right Now’ and hopefully this can continue into further strong musical showings from him and lead to live shows and larger bodies of work being released where I think T UGNA will really shine. Overall, ‘Right Now’ surpasses ‘2020 Vision’ lyrically and proves that T UGNA is capable of varying the types of rap that he can offer. This track in particular has me very interested in seeing T UGNA live to see how these tracks fare live and the adjustments needed to be made for a live performance, if any.
N: We’ve been lucky with T UGNA trusting us with his releases to date in 2020. Honestly, the growth and 180° change in style between ‘2020 Vision’ and ‘Right Now’ shows that T UGNA is constantly bettering his music. Experimenting with new styles that work for him, T UGNA sound in ‘Right Now’ is a clear step away from a song with an ear wiggling beat as it makes you focus on the lyrics closely to truly appreciate this number. Personally, I adore the story telling in ‘Right Now’, it is raw and you can feel the emotion behind the rap throughout the song.
As Emma has already stated the backing track of this song is solely the secondary focus for the listener. It compliments the lyrics remarkably; to a point it seems it is in a synchronized dance with the lyrics. It never overpowered the lyrics themselves but if you focus, even on the backing parts, you will find that it is as catchy as previous backing tracks in T UGNA’s other releases. I, for one, love the use of the softer backing track when such powerful lyrics are concerned.
Lyrically, T UGNA has outdone himself on this track:’ Right Now’. Listen closely for the clever rhyming scheme within the lyrics and the emphasis on certain words and phrases. Emotion seeps through the entirety of this song and I for one was taken aback on some concepts coming to the forefront of this song. You really do need to hear it understand the story in full. I leave the in depth decision when it comes to rhyming etc to Emma as she is the one with the English degree but even a regular listener of rap music can appreciate that T UGNA has unlocked a perfect recipe within this song.
Overall, it wasn’t what I was expecting from T UGNA as I thought it would have the same overall vibe as ‘2020 Vision’; however, I was pleasantly surprised by ‘Right Now’. It is a song for those of us who can appreciate the time and skillful artwork put in to capturing an audience just by the lyrics. With the continuing development of this artist, I look forward to seeing what direction T UGNA takes in this ever changing and explosive Irish Rap Scene.
