Spotlight Artist: 5 Seconds of Summer

If you are having trouble remembering the days of the week, dates might have passed you by. Today, May 11th, was the day us here at Our Muchness Guide were meant to go see 5 Seconds of Summer. It was going to be Emma’s first time seeing the guys live, Niamh’s 5th time and we were meant to be celebrating several things with friends at the gig. We will see them April 14th 2021 all together but, to mark the day that should have been, we decided to dedicate today’s blog post to the amazingly talented 5 Seconds of Summer! So, sit back, relax and enjoy a fun post dedicated to the music of 5 Seconds of Summer. It will include who exactly are 5 Seconds of Summer, some memories, our favourite songs, their most underrated songs in our opinions and hopefully some interesting facts along the way.

So, who exactly are 5 Seconds of Summer?

Well, if you are anything like me, Emma, you may not have had a clue who these guys were up until recently. Well, 5 Second of Summer or 5SOS are a bunch of Aussies, coming out of Sydney, who play pop rock and were formed in 2011. 5SOS consists of Luke Hemmings (lead vocalist and rhythm guitarist), Michael Clifford (lead guitarist), Calum Hood (bassist) and Ashton Irwin (drummer). They started out on YouTube posting various covers in 2011 and early 2012 and then rose to international fame touring with One Direction for the Take Me Home Tour (This is probably the key reason I didn’t hear of them sooner because 1D *shudders*). One Direction member Louis Tomlinson stated he had been a fan of 5SOS for a while when he shared the link to their song ‘Gotta Get Out’ in 2011 which gained the group a significant increase in international followers. They have since released 4 albums and headlined 3 world tours.

Music to date?

They have released 4 studio albums: ‘5 Seconds of Summer,’ ‘Sounds Good Feels Good,’ ‘Youngblood’ and, their most recent addition, ‘C A L M’. The band also has 2 live albums, 7 EPs, 21 singles and 7 B-sides. Their collection of music is nothing to be sneezed at and they even have a live documentary DVD called ‘How Did We End Up Here.’ If you’re still convinced you’ve never heard of them before, their earlier singles ‘She’s Kinda Hot,’ ‘Good Girls’ and ‘Don’t Stop’ got decent airplay here in Ireland but, much like the guys themselves, their music has matured since then and their singles ‘Want You Back’ and ‘Youngblood’ managed to see 5SOS reappear in the Irish Top 40. Their most recent album C A L M peaked at number 4 in Ireland and topped the charts in both the UK and Australia and the single ‘Teeth’, from the aforementioned album, appeared on the 13 Reasons Why: Season 3 (Music from the Original TV Series) soundtrack.

One thing we adore about the arrangement of EPs and B Sides is the same reason you need to listen to them as much as their albums; songs you never would have heard otherwise are on them. Another thing we like about 5SOS when it comes to their music is the behind the scenes videos they do for their music videos! We are not lying when we say some music video concepts took us by surprise but they are the best moments when it comes to music videos. The behind the scenes videos allows the viewer to find out what exactly sparked this idea to seeing the guys goofing around. We also would like to highlight the guys videos from behind the scenes at tour, their tour diaries videos and these will always be entertaining to watch. We would also like to take a moment to give a shout-out to 5SOS ‘Spilling the Quarantea’ catch up during this crazy time because it has given us a good few laughs; it can be found on 5SOS’s YouTube page and it is 44 minutes long (E: the pink cups moment XD I adore the BroTP that is Malum)

How many times have they been to Ireland and fun gig memories?

Now that you have been introduced to 5 Seconds of Summer it’s time we get down to some fun memories of seeing the guys live! Niamh here and I am going to take you through this section if, that is alright; you’ll understand why by the end of this section!

Take Me Home Tour 2013: The very first tour 5 Seconds of Summer supported One Direction! Two happy memories stand out from this tour. The first involves my sister. Before the concert we were walking to the venue via the Quays in Dublin. Before passing the back entrance to the arena, we were stopped to allow cars and buses in. It was in that moment we came face to face with one of the 5 Seconds of Summer vehicles. The window was slightly down and my sister shouted “Hi Ashton!” No one else around us knew who she was shouting at. He put down the window a little bit to smile, say hi and to wave at her. It’s still one of her favourite memories. The second fun memory was during their set. We were seated in the middle of the upstairs seated area. We sang every single word and were dancing like no one was watching. Not many people were in our section but, those who were, were throwing us some shady looks. Well, they were until Luke pointed right at us and said “we can see you dancing and singing along; we appreciate you. Keep it up! Everyone join in and dance to the next one!” Needless to say our night was made!

Where We Are Tour 2014: The second tour that 5SOS supported One Direction. During this gig just after we got into the venue I began to feel incredibly unwell. I had put down an uneasy feeling all morning down to nerves of being the responsible adult to my younger sister, my cousin and their friend at a huge outdoor gig at Croke Park. Turns out, I was actually fairly sick. I bopped along and sang for 5 Seconds of Summer’s set but, half way through my voice went. By the time One Direction came out I was only able to bop along. Later that night revealed a temperature of 102 and later had to go to the doctors. The joys of not leaving a gig no matter how ill you feel is my memory with 5SOS for this one.

Rock Out with Your Socks Out 2015: Their first Headliner in Dublin! The overall feeling and memory of this one was, feeling so proud and saying “They truly have made it!” At least 20 times!

Sounds Live Feels Live 2016: The show that will go down in history as the one Michael waved at me, ready for the most fangirl moment I am ever going to admit to? My sister still makes fun of me but it was a great moment. I love all the lads to bits but Michael has always been my favourite. It took me an entire song to realise that it had just happened and it wasn’t just in my head. Cheers Michael for making my night and Calum for cheekily waving too to make me die a little more inside.

The happiest memory though is yet to be made. Honestly, I think the memories created at the No Shame tour because I’ll be at it with my best friends. I cannot wait to be there to witness some of them see 5 Second of Summer for the first time!

How long have you been a fan of 5SOS?

E: So I’m really really new; basically, I bought my ticket on a whim to hang out with the girls who were all going and I only really started listening to 5sos after the release of C A L M. I knew a few of their singles from the radio and they were kind of a starting point when Niamh gave me a playlist called ‘5sos Suggestions’ which is still on our Spotify, I might add. I’m that kind of new but I had an excellent guide. But, upside, I had a sh*tload of music to buy and download and my wallet already hates me for it *thumbs up*

N: Happy to report that I’m a YouTube OG fan. Gosh so many years later and they keep getting better and better. So, that’s since Luke’s posted his cover of ‘Jersey’ by Mayday Parade in February 2011. Started off as a fan of Luke before 5 Seconds of Summer was introduced in April of that year.

Top 5 favourite 5SOS songs:

E: 1. Try Hard 2. Out Of My Limit 3. Wildflower 4. Why Won’t You Love Me 5. Amnesia

N: 1. Disconnected 2. Long Way Home. 3. Heartache On The Big Screen. 4. Jet Black Heart. 5. Not In The Same Way.

Most underrated 5SOS song?

E: Vapor – Like I said, I’m new and I spent a lot of time snooping around fan pages on Twitter and Instagram and no one warned me about this song! Then I heard this song and kind of fell in love and it hurts a little that I’ll never hear it live.

N: A number of songs come to mind when the topic of ‘Most Underrated 5SOS song’. Having said this, personally, it is ‘Close As Strangers’ for me. The emotion, the lyrics, the story and the music *heartbreaks*.

Favourite 5 SOS music video?

E: She’s Kinda Hot – just the little doodles that appear throughout always make me giggle also top quality float building. (No, not really.)

N: Don’t Stop – it still makes a huge smile appear on my face everytime I watch it! Like who doesn’t want to be a Superhero?

Which album is your favourite?

E: Youngblood. It was the first one I listened through fully and I was genuinely impressed; plus that track list is full of heavy hitters.

N: I have to say their first album 5 Seconds of Summer. It could be nostalgic reasons because it was their first album or it could be because that album has some of my favourite bops!

What is your favourite song off each album?

E: 5 Seconds of Summer: Broken Home

Sounds Good Feels Good: San Francisco

Youngblood: Empty Wallets

C A L M: Red Desert

N:  5 Seconds of Summer: Everything I Didn’t Say

      Sounds Good Feels Good: Invisible

      Youngblood: If Walls Could Talk

      C A L M: Not In The Same Way

Favourite E.P

E: Don’t Stop EP – It has ‘Don’t Stop’ (obviously) which is still a f*cking bop but it also has my absolute favourite song ‘Try Hard’ too and the song ‘Wrapped Around Your Finger’ which I adore as well *le sigh*

N: She Looks So Perfect EP. Why? Simple, it has two of my all time favourite 5 Seconds of Summer songs ‘Disconnected’ and ‘Heartache On The Big Screen’.

Favourite lyrics?

E: “It’s time to leave this old black and white town

Let’s seize the day, let’s run away

Don’t let the colors fade to gray”

Never Be

N: “I admit I’m a bit of a fool for playing by the rules

But I’ve found my sweet escape when I’m alone with you”
