Just three friends sharing their passion music, gaming, travelling, movies and a few bits in between!

Ladies and Gentlemen!! Get ready for the showdown of a lifetime! In the red corner, the Disney owned heavyweight blockbuster champion of the world, MARVEL STUDIOS! In the blue corner, the cinematic underdog and comic book hero, DC COMICS! It’s time to throw down. Now we are discussing Marvel and DC so the only Spiderman that fits in this category is Holland’s one which is a joint venture between Sony and Marvel. This also means that The Fantastic Four and the X-men are out too. No low blows. Fight clean or don’t fight at all. Let’s get ready to rumble!!!!

So first and foremost, I love comic book movies in case that wasn’t blatantly obvious already and when it come to Marvel V DC I firmly fall on the side of Marvel. In the fight between Cap and Iron-Man, I was firmly on Team Cap but I have to say that one of my favourite superheroes overall is Wonder Woman and her most recent movie is one of my favourite comic book movies to date. So in order to be a little less bias, I put the question to my Instagram followers. 93% said the preferred Marvel movies but it was split exactly down the middle when it came to which of the comics was better but DC villains are better by a small margin. Now, since we’ve that bit done and we all know that comic book movies can be truly stellar cinematic endeavours, let’s have a look at what makes comic book movies not so great…

MARVEL

Let’s be real, since 2008 the one thing Marvel has done exceptionally well is casting. It looks like Marvel have been genetically engineering actors to play specific superheroes and the level of connection between MCU movies and the multiple television series is exceptional but really Marvel did we have to go through two full phases of the MCU waiting for a female led superhero movie? Um, you’ve Black Widow right there and, yes, I’m fully aware she’s getting a movie now in PHASE 4(!!!) but girls deserved a role model superhero of their own far earlier. Hey Marvel, you know what else you like doing, removing the more subtle, nuanced aspects of some heroes. Hawkeye, a staple in the MCU, became a deaf character in the comics and was a superb tactician from the get go but the MCU has reduced him to the sometimes grumpy dad of the Avengers and the most average Avenger going. Yes, he got more screen time in Endgame but why gloss over his disability like that? Kids with disabilities would have their own superhero to look up to. Let’s get Clint Barton the recognition he deserves and show us what happened in Budapest; yes, I already know what happened but that doesn’t mean I don’t want to see it anyway! Show Marvel don’t tell. And speaking of showing and not telling where is our Hulk to Professor Hulk Movie? Dudes, why you got to do the “enormous green rage monster” dirty like that. Also I would like to start a petition that Taika Waititi…ahem, excuse me, OSCAR WINNER Taika Waititi be in charge of all Thor related developments because, let’s be real, Thor Ragnarok was better than the first two Thor movies combined and what did it have that the other two movies didn’t? Yeah that’s right….

Korg.

So Taika for President of the Planet. Cap was right in Civil War. But, come on, he belongs with Bucky. I don’t write the romantic subtext between Cap and Bucky, Marvel, you do, I merely interpret what I see. Stucky 4 Life!

DC Movies

Hi DC, we need to talk. There’s this thing that you need to add to your recent movies, it’s called a light source. I know your movies are meant to be dark and gritty but they’re so dark I don’t know what the hell I’m looking at onscreen. DC you have the potential for greatness. I want you to look at the Bale’s Batman, now at Batfleck, what’s the difference? I CAN SEE BALE’S BATMAN!!! You’ve got the perfect Wonder Woman in Gal Gadot. Henry Cavill is working as Superman. Khal Drog….I mean, Jason Momoa is the kind of Aquaman needed for the franchise but Batman seems to be where it all falls down. There is so much potential to have an unbelievable line out here but it all comes down to who plays Batman. Now, on top of this, a Batman is only ever as good as his Joker. Heath Ledger’s joker was iconic and Bale’s Batman had to rise to that challenge. The DC villains are practically the best part of DC so let’s get some good writers in to keep scripts strong and engaging and keep Margot Robbie as Harley because a) the woman walks the line between loony and downright psychotic so well and b) she also knows how to inject a bit of humour into the mausoleum that is DC movies at the moment. DC needs to utilize the best of what their current Justice League has to offer but, for the love of God, stop trying to compete with Marvel. In comparison to Marvel, you are tiny DC. Please stop, you’ll embarrass yourself. We didn’t need Justice League when we’d barely had Batfleck. Develop your core heroes then team them up. So far, all your heroes, with the exception of Supes, Bats and WW, are hugely separated from each other bring them together gradually. Now the last issue is BvS, the Superman sequel where Superman takes a back seat…. You know what, I don’t even want to talk about this just go sit in a corner and think about what you did!

Now here comes the fun bit (this is my opinion so take this whole thing with a pinch of salt):

THE TOP 10 BEST COMIC BOOK MOVIES
  1. The Dark Knight
  2. Iron Man
  3. Joker
  4. Black Panther
  5. Wonder Woman
  6. Spiderman: Far From Home
  7. Thor: Ragnarok
  8. Aquaman
  9. Captain America: Civil War
  10. Doctor Strange

If you think I left out any of the modern comic book movies that should be on the list, let me know but this is just my opinion. It’s clear that Marvel is my winner but it’s hard to say that DC has better movies and a majority of people agree with me. I guess Marvel just goes “Higher, further, faster baby” 😉
