We started our blog and never really introduced ourselves, so here we go! (And, yes, that title really was a Wild Child reference.)
What’s the best thing before sliced bread?
Niamh: Indoor Plumbing. It’s gonna be big. Aw Hunkules!
If there’s a spider in the house are you going to kill it or set it free?
Emma: I’m going to burn the house down, that b*tch gonna die!
General Questions: (Answered while listening to a lot of Taylor Swift)
Name, Age, Location.
Emma: Emma, 27 and I’m from Tullamore…unfortunately.
Niamh: Okay, Niamh, 26 and the sticks of Kilkenny.
E: You had a birthday, you remembered that!
What’s your favourite colour?
E: Purpley blue? Both? Blurple!
N: Blurple. Nice! Okay, blue. Midnight blue to be specific.
Your favourite food?
E: Favourite food? I’m going to try to be specific but Italian food always wins but I love Carbonara. So I’ll say… yeah, I’ll say Carbonara.
N: I like lasagna. Always lasagna. Mammy’s lasagna.
Your favourite dessert?
E: Sticky Toffee Pudding.
N: Anything chocolate.
E: And I mean lots of toffee. The more sugar the better.
N: Yaas!
Your favourite subject in school/college?
E: English, in school, and then when it came to college it was completely different because I realised I could study Greek and Roman cultures and I really like Greek theatre.
N: In secondary school, Geography, and in college, Early Irish Literature. So Celtic stories.
Relationship status.
E: I am a single pringle! I really shouldn’t be so enthusiastic about that.
N: Ready to mingle. Maybe…no
E: Ready to mingle with specific people.
N: oof…yes. Yes. I’m just going to go with ‘It’s complicated’.
E: It’s complicated. It’s a thing it’s happening
N: Is it ever not? It’s happening, maybe, who knows. You know, it’s complicated.
E: That’s the safe way of putting it. Safe! Why are we doing this gesture? (Brushing off the shoulder.) It’s not even got anything to do with being safe.
What do you do for fun?
E: I draw.
N: You draw. I go to gigs cause I have no social life.
E: What is that?
Do you like travelling?
E: If I didn’t get so tired after travelling, I’d probably love it and I’d love to spend more time in the places we do get to go to.
N: I’m just saying it again, we need to give up gigs for a little while and just go on a proper holiday. We need to travel.
E: No! Never!
N: Our social life would go down the drain. Travelling, yes, I love travelling.
E: Where’s your favourite place to go on holidays? Like if you could pick anywhere in the world to spend two weeks…
N: Germany. One day I will get to go on the Fairy tale tour all through Germany.
What did you want to be when you grew up?
E: I wanted to be a teacher.
N: (snickering) I could see you as a teacher though. I wanted to be an author.
E: You can see me screaming at teenagers? Screaming, and I don’t mean gently encouraging, I mean actually screaming at them.
N: They’d be terrified though
E: Yeah, damn straight they would and they’d get really good grades….or else.
Siblings?
E: Siblings?
N: It’s a question.
E: They’re a thing? I have two. I am the youngest of three kids. I’ve an older brother, Paul, and an older sister, Laura.
N: Oh, we’re giving names now. Okay, em, two siblings, brother and sister. I’m the oldest, even though I don’t act it.
E: Disney Princesses!
N: Sister is Aoife. Brother is Shane
Favourite joke?
Emma (earlier while planning these questions): My life.
E: What’s red and bad for your teeth? A brick.
N: I don’t do jokes. I just don’t get them….most of the time
Do you like spicy food?
E: Within reason.
N: No, it has to be mild or medium, not spicy spicy.
E: If it’s burning my face off, I’m not going to eat that.
N: On a scale of plain to really spicy in Nandos, what are you?
E: I’ve never been to Nandos.
N: Okay we need to change that [laughter] That’s the next thing we’re eating in Dublin.
Do you have a favourite number? Any reason why?
E: Seven because in Japan it is a good luck number and 15 just because 15.
N: 3, 7, 11 and 27, all Celtic mythology reasons.
E: 7/11. Are you sure that’s not just a shop in the US? [laughs]
N: It is actually.
[cue sing-along to Love Story by Taylor Swift for a few seconds then coughing]
E: Taylor Swift is trying to kill me by choking me to death with a piece of carrot! This is what I get for trying to be healthy.
N: Numbers are my favourite and that’s because of Celtic mythology. That is a story for another day, of white dogs and red ears.
E: What?!
N: White dogs with red ears. Seven.
E: I thought you meant red as in like Paul’s hoody there.
N: Yeah, ears. That was the colour of their ears
If you were any type of animal what would you be?
E: Cat because I’m lazy as sh*t [laughter] and I like being lazy…and warm.
N: I would probably be a dog.
E: Too enthusiastic for your own good?
N: Yep
E: Sliding all over tiled floors?
N: Yep
E: Weeee!
N: I am a Frodo. [laughter] Frodo is my dog for context (a black cocker spaniel puppy)
What kind of holidays do you like?
E: What kind of holidays?
N: Do we like sun? Do we like snow? Do we like sightseeing? Do we like relaxing?
E: I would take either or. I would take sun or snow.
N: Oh
E: I just don’t want one of those holidays where I am washed out and I’m not able to do anything.
N: That works. I’m all about the sight seeing. Museums, architecture, all of the architecture. I will go around and look at buildings for hours. Art galleries, anything cultural.
Are you introverted or extroverted?
E: I’m an introvert and always will be and always have been.
N: I am both, I think. I have my moments on both sides.
If you could buy any type of food right now, what would it be?
E: I want Twinkies. I genuinely want Twinkies [Niamh makes a face] You’re going to have to explain this deal with Twinkies.
N: That’s a story for another day.
E: That’s a story for today. Did you almost choke on a Twinkie or something?
N: [laughing] no. No it was the only food we had at one point at camp. This one time…
E: …at band camp but not really band camp but Girl Scout camp
N: Oh my God. Twinkies just make me so ill.
E: F*cking love Twinkies. You can almost taste the fat off of them but I still love them and I don’t know why.
N: Just…just even the name Twinkies just [makes a face again]
E: Twinkies!Twinkies! Twinkies!
N: War flashbacks
E: It’s like Betelgeuse, say it three times and they’ll appear [side note: no Twinkies appeared]
N: I am still Boojums. Boojums is just yes.
E: Mexican food is always good.
Who is your favourite superhero and why?
E: It will and always forever will be Captain America for me because that’s America’s ass. That’s it. That’s it done and dusted. That is my explanation right there.
N: That was the moment of that movie that I was like ‘that’s Emma.’ [laughter]
E: It really is though.
N: Favourite superhero is the Hulk because he is a misunderstood little pumpkin and a green pumpkin at that cause he’s not orange.
E: Does that mean he’s not ripe?
N: He’s still misunderstood! And he’s my little pumpkin.
E: Okay….
What is the first thing you notice about a person when you first meet?
E: Um
N: A person in general first.
E: A person in general? How they’re standing. If they’re standing like really….. With their arms crossed and it doesn’t look like they want you to talk to them, I am going to be the person who kinda goes ‘Okie dokie so we’re going that way.’ What about you?
N: Smile in general. So when they’re talking if they’re smiling or not or if it’s just a stone reaction
E: How did we even become friends? [laughter]
N: That is a good question.
What is the first thing you notice about your crush?
N: Lay it all on the line
E: Lay it all on the line? Oh Jesus… I’m going to give it away. I’m going to say it is his smile.
N: Aw, that’s cute.
E: Mmm hmm, let’s not talk about this anymore.
N: I’m eyes and I just get lost in them [laughter] Anyone who has witnessed it…
E: Me!
N: God love ye
E: Yeah
N: ‘cause I just daze out
What is the song you hear most often?
N: We had a debate about this. This is the one that haunts you.
E: Yeah, the one that you hear everywhere you turn.
N: On radio stations, looking at you Today FM!
E: Mmm Hmm! Um for me it’s ‘Outnumbered’ by Dermot Kennedy.
N: ‘Always’ by Gavin James. [cue singing]
Nickname?
E: I never really had a proper nickname. Most people just call me Em.
N: Em counts.
E: But not many people call me that, really family and you and that’s about it. And you won’t let anybody else call me that so… I don’t really have a nickname. [for context Niamh insists that people be able to answer specific questions about Emma before they can call her Em. Contact Niamh for more details.]
N: Okay so… We have Niamhie by my family, like my aunt and uncle and the kids and some of my cousins and stuff. Then we’ve Neef with you because of Jacapo, our lecturer from Italy, who couldn’t say my name properly. He used to say ‘f’ instead of a ‘v’ sound. And then there’s Pixie or Pix from camp in America. My camp name was Pixie but everyone called me Pix.
Favourite flower?
E: Ones that are still alive?
N: Yeah, Emma doesn’t really like….
E: “Nothing says I love you quite like a dead plant!” That’s what I always say so…there we go.
N: Where mine is white rose because it is Shakespeare’s rose and what is in a name by which we call a rose. Even though the white rose is from a sonnet.
Coffee?
E: I’m sticking to my answer from earlier.
N: What?
E: Well it depends on what you look like [giggling]
N: Coffee? Yes! I love coffee.
E: How do you take your coffee?
N: All I can think of when you say that is, you know the song, ‘How do you like your eggs in the morning?’ Um… lots of milk, two sugars unless it’s from my favourite place then it’s just one sugar now.
E: Oooo!
N: Yeah shout out to Mark.
Favourite Season?
N: Winter, always. Snuggle weather and snow and just winter.
E: I like autumn cause you don’t need a big heavy jacket but you can go around in over-sized hoodies. Hot drinks, everything is pretty and orange and yellow and red and it’s really pretty. I like that. I like colour. I always find winter kinda dull cause there’s not much colour.
N: The fire and the Christmas decorations and for main winter all of the reds.
Last time you cried?
N: Um…did I cry yesterday? No, I didn’t. Did I? I cry a lot. Let’s just get that down there. So last Wednesday on the phone to dad telling him that I finally handed in the last of everything [for her thesis] and him telling me to get a grip and get a life, [laughing] take a rain check for once and shake it off and ring him back in 10 minutes to actually talk to him properly. He doesn’t do emotion.
E: I don’t either. I think…I don’t…I can’t actually remember the last time I cried.
N: It was happy tears by the way.
Texting or talking?
N: Okay talking but I have severe dyslexia so texting is a sh*t thing for me.
E: I’m always texting
N: You’re always texting, I’m talking. I prefer talking cause, you know, deep meaningful conversations and you can actually tell what way certain sentences are meant.
E: I can write a deep meaningful conversation….
N: Yeah but you actually put in the asterisk and tell me like *sarcastic* or *hugs* or *laughing* or, you know, stuff like that…I need context sometimes.
Do you believe in fate?
N: Yes. What about you?
E: Absolutely. I don’t believe in coincidences; things don’t just happen at random so so perfectly and so awkwardly, if you know what I mean.
N: Mmm hmm
E: So every time I hear ‘Long Time No See’ [by Wild Youth] and I hear that “Is it coincidence or just pure fate?” I’m like ‘nah, it’s fate.’
N: It’s fate
E: It’s all predetermined. This was supposed to happen.
N: Whether you like it or not
If you could push a button to make everyone in the world 7% happier but it would also place a ban on hair styling products, would you push the button? [this question made both of us laugh…. A lot.]
N: I’m going on my answer from earlier and saying yes. Just think of all of us who have low moments, I could deal with 7% more happiness.
E: Yes but could certain people that we both know deal without hair products? [a lot of laughter]
N: Without hair products they can get used to the frizziness, screw that!
E: They can get used to the emo fringe too [XD]
N: Emo fringe is adorable.
Do you always associate your crushes with songs?
N: Yes!
E: Yep, definitely.
N: Okay so what is the current song at the moment?
E: Style by Taylor Swift
N: oooo that’s a good one. Okay so Niamh’s love life is always complicated so Complicated by Avril Lavigne
What are you freakishly bad at?
N: Everything
E: Wait, wait, wait.
N:Walking in a straight line…
Both: …on a flat surface
E: I am horribly bad at folding pieces of paper. I have to make a concentrated effort to actually fold a piece of paper…..and hearing. I’m forever going to be bad at that but eh…
N: It’s grand I’m going to be bad at balance.
[For context, Niamh suffers from vertigo while Emma is partially deaf. The paper folding thing has no explanation though.]
Name one thing on your bucket list?
N: One thing on my bucket list? That I haven’t done yet?
E: Yeah
N: I’m waiting til Grad but I really want to get a tattoo.
E: Same! That’s what I was thinking too.
N: If it actually happens everyone can find out what exactly it is.
E: Yes! Yeah I already know what I’m getting first so the day of your graduation you’ll be getting two tattoos cause we have to get one together, don’t forget that.
N: We have one planned. That’s my bucket list, what’s yours?
E: My bucket list is get a tattoo or be brave.
Describe yourself in 3 words.
N: You go first
E: An Absolute Joke [laughing]
N: No, you’ve to be nice to yourself.
E: Um, I’m quiet. I can be quite focused when I want to be and loyal, that’s one thing I get told a lot. Loyal.
N: How many words is that?
E: I’ll say it this way: focused, quiet and loyal. They’re my 3 words
N: Chatty cause I can talk for Ireland, let’s be real.
E: Mmm, you’d talk to a brick wall
N: Yeah, the brick wall mightn’t answer back but I can talk to a brick wall. Um, patient apparently…
E: Yeah
N: Especially with kids. And, mmm, naive but in a sense that I try to see the best in people the whole time. So I don’t think that anyone ever has malicious intent or is trying to use me for stuff or is trying to, you know, befriend me for their own selfish gain. So I’m naive in that sense but not in others.
What is your favourite movie quote?
N: “Happiness can be found in the darkest of times, if one only remembers to turn on the light.” – Albus Dumbledore, Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban.
E: “The flower that blooms in adversity is the most rare and beautiful of all.” – The Emperor, Mulan.
Your biggest addiction?
N: What did I say earlier?
E: Your phone
N: My phone! Yeah, my phone.
E: My biggest addiction…probably reading too much into a situation
N: So overthinking?
E: Yeah
N: Yeah I can see that.
Most likely to make the first move?
E: Hell to the hell no!
N: Out of the pair of us, always me. Always me.
E: I’m never going to make the first move. EVER! Never, No way. Nuh uh! Not a hope.
E: Are we done?
N: Yeah.
E: YAY!
